Our Strategic Plan

The year 2015 brought socio-economic growth and remarkable progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 1 . Adopted in 2000 in New York, the MDGs have guided development and international economic cooperation for the past years and proven that global goals can lift millions of people out of poverty. The year 2015 also epitomized a springboard for the new sustainable development agenda of the United Nations. The new ambitious and universal sustainable development agenda, which contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, is an important framework to address three inter-connected elements of sustainable development, namely economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

What is sustainable development? 2

  • Sustainable development has been defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
  • Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet.
  • Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. To this end, there must be promotion of sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth, creating greater opportunities for all, reducing inequalities, raising basic standards of living, fostering equitable social development and inclusion, and promoting integrated and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems.

Addressing the challenges and opportunities of capacity building and poverty alleviation to benefit rural communities in the long-term will therefore require novel approaches.
